ON THE TRAILS

Over the past few weeks we’ve been hitting the trails on the Titan Sonic. From long distance gravel grinding, steep winding climbs and technical trail riding the Sonic has held its own.

A short ride through Jonkershoek Nature Valley proved as a great testing ground for Titan’s first full susser. A quick loop of the valley showed the Titans’ pedigree for marathon racing. The longer chain stays and direct positioning over the crank aided in pedalling as we took on the loop. Pedalling efficiency was easy and there was minimal bob in the in the rear shock. As we approached our first climp up a rutted-out section of jeep track the Sonic changed its’ rhythm. A quick flick of the handlebar mounted lockout and we were ready to climb. The 70® head angle helped get the weight over the front wheel and as we navigated the loose terrain it made all the difference. With the loose rock and sand being able to shift your weight forward really helped put the power down and after a few short minutes we were at the start of the singletrack. Here a few points really stood out. With a quick descent in mind we checked our tyre pressure and adjusted our saddle height. Time for some fun! The 720mm bars made it is east to control the bike when passing through a few rocky sections at speed. The short wheel base and nimble steering made the single-track fun to pedal through and changing direction came naturally. The Titan Tubeless Ready Tyres were a real plus when rocketing out of the berms. They gripped superbly on the dry compacted trails and never once did we get nervous of sliding out. A few standout features on the groupset are SLX brakes which feel as if they could bring a truck to a screaming halt, as well as the flawless shifts of Shimano’s XT 2×11 set up. What a pleasure to ride. All in all the Sonic is suitable for a range of riding and the lightweight aluminium frame is a solid choice for racing.
